The History of Tequila

Tequila, Jalisco is where tequila production originated and continues today. This charming town can be found at the base of the Tequila Volcano. The blue agave plant is the main component in tequila, and visitors are in awe when they see the mesmerizing fields. In the early 1500’s, the original inhabitants in the area began to use the blue agave plant to make a fermented drink known as pulque. Later, the Spanish conquerors arrived in the area, then they began to distill this fermented beverage to produce tequila. This region was called Santiago de Tequila in 1530. In 1541, the locals began to rise up against Spanish rule, and Friar Juan Calero tried to keep the peace. However, a violent encounter ensued and the monk met his demise via rocks and arrows. Then, they took his body and placed it high upon a stone, so that everyone would be reminded of this terrible event. Today, tequila is a wildly popular drink around the world. The interesting history and importance of Tequila town is why it was named a World Heritage Site.
