Independence Day History in Mexico

Herman Cortez, a conquistador in Spain conquered the Aztecs in 1521 in Mexico. As a result, Mexico became a Spanish colony. For almost 300 years, Spain ruled over Mexico until the early eighteen hundreds. During that time, Mexicans decided to revolt against the Spanish so they could have their independence. A Roman Catholic priest in Dolores, Mexico started ringing the bell at the church, which was a call to arms. The priest was named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, and that moment is recognized as the start of the Mexican War of Independence. Independence Day in Mexico, also known as Dia de la Independencia (Spanish), starts the celebration on September 15th just a few minutes before midnight. The ringing occurs to let everyone know that Independence Day is here on September 16th.
