The History of Jazz: Roots in Blue and Ragtime

Did you know that the roots of jazz are found in blues and ragtime musical traditions taken from Africa and Europe? Many people say that jazz is a blend of African and European music that is all about rhythm and soul. Many people say that jazz music originated in African-American communities in New Orleans about 100 years ago during the early 20th century, while others believe jazz was born earlier in 1895 when Buddy Bolden started his first band. Also, jazz really came alive in the year 1917 when Nick LaRocca and his Original Dixieland Jazz Band recorded the first jazz record known as, “Livery Stable Blues.” Despite the exact origins of jazz music, it became much more popular in the 1920’s when it became part of American popular culture. The original jazz sound that started in New Orleans quickly diversified and began to appeal to people from various sectors of society.  Even fashion in the 1920’s was influenced by jazz music. The Jazz Age during the 1920’s propelled jazz to become recognized as a major form of musical expression. Today, jazz music is an important part of American history, and essentially gave birth to swing, big band, pop rock and roll, soul hip-hop and rap music as well.
